Packed for Guatemala

So I'm packed. Francisco is so wonderful to look after the house, the cats and Mr. Sophie while I'm gone. He also gave me an outrageous bar of chocolate with way too much espresso beans in it. I'm not feeling the effects. I'm also feeling a bit run down, and with all the news about Swine Flu pandemic, I'm trying to load up on kale and blueberry juice to boost my immunity.

I'll be arriving in Guatemala City at 7:30 at night, and I am to be picked up by an associate of pop-wuj school (http://www.pop-wuj.org/) in Xela and taken to her house in Guatemala City. Saturday I'll take a bus to Xela where I'll stay there till Sunday when I'm placed with the family that I"ll be staying with. Classes start on monday, where I'll be volunteering with the clinic that is connected to their medical Spanish program. I'll be taking the program for just over 3 weeks. I've brought a bunch of supplies thanks to Lyon Martin and and the generic meds section at Target. Yay for $1 toothbrushes with toothpaste!!!

There have been lots of reports of faux taxi drivers robbing unsuspecting tourists etc due to the growing instability of the country, particularly in Guatemala City. I'm sure once I get there it will be fine, but I've heard a lot of scary stories, and a few people I spoke too gave me advice to "be careful". I've also heard a lot of stories about how amazing the people are and am really looking forward to being in a different culture for a bit. I'm also a little concerned about this swine flu pandemic scare. Let's hope the US doesn't close the borders before I get back. The EU is already talking about taking that route. I have a feeling it will all wind down by June. Considering 35,000 people died of influenza in the US last year, one US death from swine flu doesn't seem like that much.

I'll try and post as often as I can. The school has computers with interenet, so I'll have lots of access, but I also don't want to be speaking or writing too much English while I'm there, as it is an immersion course. Anyway, stay posted, and next time I write, I'll probably be in Xela....
